Welcome to the official website for the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians. We are a South Carolina state
recongized tribe under Chapter 31, Title 1 of the SC Code of Laws of 1976, Section 1-31-40(A)(6)(10) and Chapter 139, Article 1 of the Code of Regulations. We are a 501 (c) 3 organization
charted in South Carolina.
The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians is a Native American community located on highway 17-A between the towns of Moncks Corner and Summerville near Carnes Crossroads. This community resides in Berkeley County, which at one time stretched from St. James, Goose Creek Parish to St. John’s Parish. We have been known by different names, the most common are Varnertown Indians and Summerville Indians. Currently, we have over 1500 documented bloodline descendants with over 200 years of history.
The mission of the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians is to provide economic enhancment of the Varnertown Community: to eduate its members in their history and culture; to provide opportunities for its people to share their arts andulture; to preserve the history of traditions of its ancestors; and to promote public awareness of the communites contribution and existance in the general population.
